Name:   Sphenophyllum sp.
Age:  Pennsylvanian
Formation:  Llewellyn Formation
Location:  Near St. Clair, Pennsylvania
Size:  Plate is 5 inches tall

Here is a very interesting plate of Coal Age plants. This is Sphenophyllum sp. from the Pennsylvanian of Pennsylvania. This unusual fossil plant consisted of a slender stem bearing whorls of wedge-shaped leaves. This plant became extinct at the end of the Pennsylvanian. This plate of Sphenophyllum ''flowers'' exhibits nice detail. There are many whorls of leaves present on this plate. The slender stems are seen, and the individual, spatulate leaves are clearly defined. These fossils have a distinct, natural white coloration. This is a very fine example of these unique fossil plants.
