Name:   Margaretia dorus
Age:  Middle Cambrian
Formation:  Wheeler Formation
Location:  Millard County, Utah
Size:  Plate is 4.2" X 4.9"

Here is an extremely unusual fossil algae specimen. This is Margaretia dorus from the Cambrian of Utah. Margaretia was probably a thin, frond-like algae similar to modern kelp. The fronds are perforated by a network of small oval holes. This type of algae is also found in the famous Burgess Shale deposits of Canada. This specimen has good form and fine detail. Under magnification, the unique structure is easily seen. The fossil has beautiful, natural red coloration and striking contrast. The algae is well positioned on the large, semi-squared plate of matrix. This is a nice display example of this uncommon fossil from Utah.
